THREE TIPS FOR WORKING OUT IN A MASK

This year has presented a new piece of must-have equipment for your gym bag - a mask! Masks are likely to continue to make their way in and out of the gym. So, we’re breaking down our top three tips for how to workout with a mask - and forget it’s even there.

Masks is mandatory in Portland gym

#1 Paper or Fabric?

Home sewers and top athletic brands alike have tried to make the most comfortable and reusable masks. After testing out all of these options, the winner was surprising. Disposable paperbacks are the best to work out in. They are lightweight, have enough structure to sit away from your mouth, and can easily be swapped out during those extra sweaty sessions.

#2 Give Yourself Some Space

Whether you’re using paper or fabric masks, the number 1 suggestion I give to all of my clients is to purchase reusable plastic inserts. These are a game changer!

The major discomfort that comes up when wearing a mask is when the mask starts to move with your breath, especially when your mask gets wet and starts to move in and out with your breath. It can make it tough to get a full deep breath in easily.

Placing an insert under your mask creates a little bubble, and prevents your mask from getting wet and moving.

Bonus tip: For those who find the standard mask to be a little bit big, the plastic insert makes masks fit perfectly snug!

#3 Remember to Breathe

It’s a natural response to panic at first when our mouths are covered, but it’s a response that with a little practice we can overcome - and even use to our advantage. By wearing a mask, you have a higher awareness of your breath. You can hear, feel, and smell (maybe grab a mint) your breath throughout your workout. Use that as a guide to know when to push a little harder and equally when to pull back.

Love it or hate it, masks are part of our lives and our workouts. Use these tips to find the most comfortable option for you, and remember the importance you have in our community! By wearing your mask you're keeping yourself and others safe, and helping us keep gyms open!
